just having an open mind

comments: addressed to "I know I’m Black, so why are you reminding me!"

"It is not so simple to say let us forget about our black roots because we need to remember where we have come from and compare it to where we are now. Thus all of our accomplishments must be celebrated so that we do not become ignorant and allow similar things to happen to us that happened centuries ago.

I am not asking you or anyone to let go or forget where we came from, but we need to move forward and stop crying over split milk.

How has the past affected you as a person today?
Today we make our own decisions, and it’s not based on who our Ancestors were and if our neighbors are racist. We forgive, endure and move on. As individuals, Black, White or Chinese, we should want the best for ourselves, our children and our children’s children…

“Being ignorant and allow similar things to happen”. (Sigh)… Have an open mind sweet heart. If we continue to better ourselves and move on, how can you ever see that happening again especially in times like this?
• Know your rights/Educate yourself
• Don’t be intimidated by others who think their better than you
• Read material that would help you to empower yourself and make a difference

It’s our outlook on life that puts us in the position we are today. Society plays a role in our day to day lives, but it’s left up to us on where we want to go. Opportunities rain for us to be better people and we have choices to take full advantage or how I would like to put it, “run with it and shine” or not! -We can look at this in so many ways...

-Martin Luther King had a dream, and he just didn't sit on it.

-Oprah Winfrey, one woman who I highly respect because she works extremely hard and gives back. She is the most philanthropic African American of all time, and was once the world's only black billionaire. She is also, according to some assessments, the most influential woman in the world. (and its not because she is black that got this far).

*Let's look at Beyonce Knowles, do u think she sings and work so hard because she's black and to add, she has fans all over the world.

and then came - Barack Obama, he acknowledges where we came from, but continues to fight for all and not just people of color.

Do you remember when the U.S. Senate approved the resolution apologizing for slavery?
Personally, I would have taken that as an insult. Why now? But then again I cant blame them. They are trying to tell us in a sarcastic yet diplomatic way that we are now "Liberated" from the day Barack Obama was sworn in as the first black President.

There is just so many reasoning behind this:
-they voted for him as well
-they are hoping now we will just be quiet about being black (bark less and swag more) it's for us to show them who's the bigger and better person and that's why I cant be bothered. I intend to be the best at what I do and pray for health and wisdom, life is to short...

Just keep in mind "Happiness keeps u sweet, and trails keep u strong"

Knowing where we have come from as a people is enough motivation to do well and to continue to do well. You may be willing to forget and move on but the white race is not going to forget. People in general are not as idealistic as you are and they will put stumbling blocks to make you fall. It is your awareness of your black roots and the awful pain that our ancestors endured which will prepare us for the stumbling blocks that the white controlled world will place against us.

I am trying to analyze why you’re so sensitive about this, because I can see that you are. Were you a victim of racial profiling or some sort? I just need to know how this affects you as an individual, let’s not look at the past or around us.

Please keep in mind that there are other racial groups being denied rights and benefits, so what is it that makes Black people so special when we speak about racism?

I like to have an open mind and tend to get a bit deep, so don’t get me wrong when I say “we need to move forward and stop crying over split milk”. I just rather look back at what I know and what I have experienced, and that is growing up in with my mom and my two other siblings with no father around. Watching my mom work hard to provide for us so that we could be happy and she has accomplished so much on her own.

I experience racism everyday. I am accessed by the colour of my skin first because I cannot hide that and that is the reality of how the world is.

I am black so I cannot speak of other racial groups. What I would say is that we are the only race which had our religion, culture, freedom, and family removed from us at the same time. Other groups were allowed to keep their traditions and family structure but we lost that. Imagine being married to a woman only to have her taken away and sold to another plantation. We need to remember all these things so that we can rebuild our race and become stronger as a people. It is not something to keep us down and to be ashamed of but to be used as a marker to show us how far we have reached as a people.

Dear Anonymous,

I respect how your views and comments. Personally, I think you need to look in the mirror every morning before you leave home and tell yourself there is no one out there better than you. This way you would not feel like your being scorned because of the color of your skin. Black Is Beautiful and I’m quite sure you are too...

Thanks MRD. and thanks again for the feedback

I do not have a problem with my skin colour. It is society which judges me by it. I need to be aware of that and it is not something that can be ignored like what you are trying to do.

O'Jay-Maria said...

yeah, just like i know i am crazy and aware of it!! so y am i going to ignore the fact i am black. I am ignoring what Society thinks... get a clue Anonymous. thats y your posting comments as Anonymous, cause your obviously insecure. i don't know what's it like to be insecure of my self, so i cant relate. Live Your Life For You and make the best out of it and Society would respect you and others who would always judge you.

Anonymous said...

O'Jay you are blogging but don't make any sense at all. Read more and research more please and at least your arguments will be better constructed and make more sense. You are exposing your deficiencies to the public. You think that because your skin colour is light that it puts you in a different light but it does not! You are still black! I can blog as anonymous or as Bob or as whatever I want to blog as.

O'Jay-Maria said...

As mentioned, your feedback is welcomed here. But do you see it for yourself, and this is Y Black people could not move on or up in life. Carbs in a Barrel. That's what we are. I can see Y u are judged by society. Your bitter and pull others down to your level, you should try to encourage others. Seeing that this information your reading and commenting on every week came out of no where, then HEY!!! I'm a Brain! On the real though my small minded friend. I don't think you read the Blog properly.

Anonymous said...

I read it properly and you absolutely make no sense at all. You are living a fairy tale and need to get back to reality.

O'Jay-Maria said...

Hey Bob Anonymous,

It looks like we are getting somewhere, and that's why its called Opinion Writing. Everyone views on life is different. If all horses ran a like, then there will be no need for a race. go figure!

But u need to have an open mind and present your argument TO ME with substantial information rather than hate on my development. So stop crying to me because you choose to keep yourself back/down because your BLACK.

Peace out kid!

I am not down O'Jay but unlike you I am not going to forget where I came from. You have not proven your argument at all. If you look at what is going on in America now, the opposition to the health care reform bill is all about racism and nothing to do with any real objections. Watch any news media and you will see the kind of things that are being said about President Obama. So if you think that everyone is as forgiving and forgetful as you are then you are truly clueless.

Jade said...

Hi I'm Jade stated boldly before I"m absurdly assumed to be "insecure".The funniest thing about this argument is that everyone is saying Black Black .. such an ignorant American term ... I'm of African decent because I don't want u confusing me with the Aboriginals from Australia they are black too but they are not descendants from Africa.
Only a person that has not been treated inferior or has not educated themselves would want to deny there past.

The past shapes the future. My dear friend O'Jay african decendants today must struggle to become equal with other races including the Chineese and Indians because when they where in Asia developing themselves my ancestors were being stripped and shipped to the West. They came to this part of the world with NOTHING .When slavery was over THEY didnt clothed us and paid us.We had to start from SCRATCH.

I do not keep my self at a lower standard because of history I work towards a better future. However that does not prevent the world from viewing me as inferior even my own race. Some "black women" would even prefer to marry a white man because they believe this would lift their social status. If I choose to forget history and live for today that does not stop the world from associating my race with crime ,lawlessness and poverty.

The persons that you are referring to as split milk are responsible for your freedom to write what u feel here in this blog.

Ideals do not exist even if it would be fair. Skin colour is not equal to eye colour. And we all hope for a day when it would and all humans would be equal no matter there melanin content. But that day is not today.

o'Jay-Maria said...

Nicely put together, but still we continue to dwell on the past. What does the past have to do with my development for the future? And how does slavery become "MY PAST"?
I am equally aware and very much educated like every other African American when we speak of Slavery.

Again, I just rather look back at what I know and what I have experienced, and that is growing up in with my mom and my two other siblings with no father around. Watching my mom work hard to provide for us so that we could be happy and she has accomplished so much on her own.

Further more, debates like this rages on. While some still look for answers. In the end, as filmmaker Spike Lee has observed and quoted 'The ultimate answer lies with ourselves'.
and I have found that...
With self-help, self-reflection, personal growth, and the idea that the pursuit of personal happiness is a meaningful guide for how 'I' choose to live 'My life'.
And if O'Jay-Maria Harris chooses to ignore what society thinks of her, that's because I live my life for me, not them.

Take a look at the Poem Bury Me in a Free Land written by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper.
read deep into the last line...
'Is bury me not in a land of slaves'

And if you are looking for a realistic meaning of slavery in our world today, we need to focus on what's happening when the Government is enslaving our children/our future by spending money we do not have, on services that we do not need! Rather than taking us back to the past being ignorant of what's happening in todays world .

Jade, Bob, Anonymous- who ever you are, you need to broaden your outlook on life. The Past is the Past. We all are asked to forgive yet not to forget.

Jade said...

"The ultimate answer lies with ourselves" so very true I agree 100 percent. However we "ourselves" are fragments of something old the combination of DNA from two pre -existing humans. I do not think that we should live our lives in the past but we must pay acknowledgment to what occured both good and bad in order to strengthen our minds.
The past teaches us valuable lessons and the various shortcomings of the past may help in giving the solutions for the problems of today. For example if you go about answering something with out referring to the way others have tried it before even if it didnt work ..you would save yourself a lot of hassle.

One cannot broaden one's aspect of life if one does not take an holistic approach to things.

Slavery becomes your past because your life today is as result of it; you are an inhabitant of a Caribbean island rediscovered by Europeans unless your Amerindian your mother country is not here.

One cannot broaden one's aspect of life if one does not take an holistic approach to things.

Slavery is MY past and I am proud to have the blood of freedom fighters in my veins. Just as you are proud of the job that your mother did with your family. Sankofa Jade

Baby On Board…

A little business I founded in 2007, which was inspired by my sister who has 5 kids, I looked at their lil bam bams, and said I could make some money here. (laugh out loud) smile…

I was selling and delivering wipes and pampers all over ANU, it was the best thing I ever did with my life, now the power started, I wanted more…

Laying down and sharing my life with a good friend, he turned and said “With Power, Education is the Foundation!”
And that stayed with me for months and I told my self, “ I have accomplished this much before the age of 25 yrs, I could now take the back seat and go back to school cause I want that POWER! INDEPENCE! WALKING WITH MY HEAD UP FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS…

In all that, I want to be happy, straight smiles...

My Favorite Quotes

"Don't take no for and answer"...."Whatever we expect with confidence becomes our own self-fulfilling prophecy" –

"Today's dreams, Yesterdays regret is Tomorrows opportunity"...

"Becoming Real about Love, Work and My Body"...

A breakup is like a broken mirror...

You are better off leaving it broken rather than hurting yourself trying to fix it.

My Life - My Way...

I am Confident and Independent, but this attitude comes with the whole 9 yards. Drama, Tears, Lies and Deceit, Secret Affairs and Jealousy; Break ups and Make ups; Forgiving but never forgets. Moody with Beauty, Brains and Body.

'My Life' was is still about partying, dating and calling my own shots. Then I lost my power of confidence, and all I had was a pretty face and a regular 8-4 job. I wanted more and I deserved more! I love the social events and nightlife. When I drink, I become the Flirtatious Butterfly. You would think I'm a natural.

In a room where you have cute guys and Ms. O’Jay-Maria, know there’s double trouble. Nothing to be ashamed of I guess, why pretend to be something I'm not when everybody wants to be me!

Throughout life, I also learnt that falling in love is great and the break ups are even greater, it made me stronger. Loosing best friends helped me to appreciate the new ones. My greatest joy now is myself. I love me for who I am and what I do. I have been there, done that and now sharing my life experiences with that world...

Oh yes, I'm back to Ms. Confident and Ms. Independent! I have accomplished a lot and still moving forward. I tell people every day, its being content with yourself that counts, but only if you’re progressing in life. "Just balance life". At this moment my plate is full and I’m limited, so it's hard just trying to balance it.

O'Jay-Maria is about focusing on her goals…

.....................................................................................

I have Miguel R. Donawa and Noel T. Ramdass to thank, they have inspired me and still continue to do that. Thank you!

There are just some people in life you have to cherish and remember.
